A slightly shorter but reliably timed night likely serves your heart better than a chaotic schedule that occasionally hits eight hours. Pick a bedtime window you can realistically hold seven days a week — weekends included — and protect it like an appointment.
Wearables: Can You Actually Track Your Sleep?
You can’t manage what you don’t measure, and sleep-tracking wearables have become genuinely useful tools for spotting patterns. A few caveats first: no consumer wearable matches a clinical sleep study, and none can diagnose a sleep disorder. What they’re great at is showing you trends over time and nudging better habits. Special cells in your retina detect it and signal the SCN to suppress melatonin — fine at 8 a.m., a problem at 10 p.m. What actually helps:
- Dim and warm your environment after sunset. Switch to low, warm-toned lighting; near-darkness is ideal for the last hour before bed.
- Put screens down 60–90 minutes before bed. If you must be on a device, use night mode and reduce brightness.
- Wear real blue-blocking glasses in the evening (more on choosing them below).
- Flip the script in the morning. Get 10–30 minutes of bright, ideally outdoor, light shortly after waking — the single most powerful anchor for a healthy rhythm.
Choosing blue-blocking glasses: tint matters more than brand
This is where most people waste their money. Clear or barely-tinted “blue light glasses” filter mostly the 400–430 nm range and provide negligible circadian benefit. The wavelengths that actually suppress melatonin sit around 460–500 nm, and to block those, a lens has to be visibly tinted amber, orange, or red. If your lenses look clear, they are not doing the job for sleep.
